In the UK we call it patchwork quilting with the patchwork being the construction of patchwork pieces that form the top of the three layer quilt sandwich with the inner wadding and the bottom quilt backing. All of this is then held in place by the quilt stitching which often forms decorative patterns. In the US, and therefore the term favoured by Google and other search engines, then the term quilting is mainly used without the patchwork.
